Growing and Showing Border Dahlias

We have new classes for a bowl of bedding dahlias in the Flowers and Novice Flowers sections of our Autumn Show schedule.  Bedding dahlias are normally the dwarf type.  These may be new to you so here is some information if you’d like to try growing and showing them.

Border dahlias can be grown from seeds, tubers or purchased in pots from a garden centre.

Plant tubers outdoors after the last frost (May) or start them indoors in a greenhouse in late March / April.

They can be grown in well-draining soil, enriched with organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure, 2 feet apart, in a sunny border. They also can be grown in 10 – 12inch pots (1 tuber) or more in a bigger pot.

Keep soil moist but avoid over watering. Fertilize with high potash feed every two weeks once the plants reach  5 – 6 inches tall.

Remove faded flowers and pinch out the main growing tips to encourage branching and increase flower production.

Lift tubers after the first frost, cut stems back, dry, and store in a frost- free, dark, cool place until spring.

The best size bowl to display the border dahlias at the show, is about the same size as a rose bowl.

Reputable suppliers such as Halls of Heddon have a good website explaining the different types of dahlias – you can see more about dwarf bedding dahlias on page 3
