Events

All our meetings will be held at Stewart Hall, Little Kimble.  If you are not a member but would be interested in attending any meetings please contact Brian Butler (Chairman) at butler@care4free.net or call him on 01844 342220.  

Meetings are held at 8.00 pm every 1st Tuesday of the month (except January and August).  Although we pride ourselves on our expert speakers, all talks are very informal and are followed by refreshments and a raffle. 

Visitors are always welcome - do come and try one of our meetings.  If you decide you would like to join please make yourself known to any Committee member or contact Liz O'Donnell, Membership Secretary, at kehs.bucks@outlook.com.

Hostas

Andrew Mikolajski, writer, speaker and RHS judge returns to talk to us about hostas, which he considers essential in any garden, and advises how to choose amongst the many fabulous varieties. He also covers the history of hostas in gardens, how to grow them (including slug control), propagation and growing in containers.

Colour in a Small Garden

Timothy Walker, former Director at Oxford University Botanic Gardens and now lecturer in Plant Sciences at Somerville College, Oxford, is always a very informative and entertaining speaker.  This comprehensively updated talk was inspired by the Botanic Garden's Gold Medal winning exhibit at the Chelsea Flower Show.  It explains some of the theory employed by artists and gardeners to achieve a variety of effects.  The theory is supported by examples of specific colour combinations from his wife's garden of 1/5 acre and the new much smaller garden.

Growing Food Not Gluts

Hazel Roberts from Jam MK will be looking at how gluts can be avoided during the planning and planting process of a kitchen garden and then exploring ways to use what you have grown so that it doesn’t go to waste.  She will also bring along a selection of her homemade jams and chutneys and mini recipe books.

New Naturalistic Planting

Amber Hine, who trained in garden design at Capel Manor College, returns to look at the rising popularity of looking to nature to design our natural spaces.  She’ll be using examples from contemporary garden and landscape gardeners employing this process and looking at the wonders of perennials, meadows and woodland edges.

PLANT SALE – Ellesborough Village Hall, Butlers Cross

This is a great opportunity to buy locally grown perennials, vegetables and annuals. Come early - everything will be sold by about 11 00 am on past form.

 

JUNE

How to Propogate, Plant and Grow Peonies

Tuesday 3rd

Alec White, owner of Primrose Hall Peonies, grows herbaceous, intersectional, tree and patio peonies and is a gold medal winner at Chelsea.  This talk is an introduction to the origins and history of peonies, propagation techniques and breeding, choosing the perfect peony and how to care for and maintain your peony.

Members Garden Visit

Visit to Professor Sandy Primrose’s garden in High Wycombe which contains many interesting and specialist plants.  We will have a guided tour and refreshments and look forward to seeing how his garden has developed since our visit in 2015.  Details to be announced nearer the time.

Members Garden Visit

Meadow Cottage at Christmas Common, Watlington, has an enchanting 1¾ acre garden which adjoins ancient woodlands and includes a wildflower garden, pond, fruit trees and a professionally designed vegetable garden. It also has many shrubs, varied hedging and indigenous trees.  The visit includes home-made cakes and tea.

Bulbs in Borders

Kerrie Lloyd-Dawson is a garden writer, plantaholic and Plant Heritage Plant Guardian whose garden is open to NGS.  She will discuss her recommendations for how to add an extra layer of planting with bulbs and corms that remain in the border year after year.

OCTOBER

Growing Perennials and Woody Plants for Cutting

Tuesday 7th

Rachel Seigfried, the founder of the Green and Gorgeous flower farm and florist, will talk about why she grows predominantly perennials and woody plants for cut foliage and flowers. She will highlight her favourites through the seasons, many of which are well known garden plants, and offer some tips and cultivation for cut flower use and how to arrange them in the home.

She will also bring some dahlias, her own seeds and her book.

Macaronesia: The “Galapagos of Botany” Plus Christmas Social Plus Christmas Social

The Azores, Madeira, Cape Verde and Canary Islands have an exceptionally large number of native plants that is totally disproportionate to their size. Professor Sandy Primrose will explain why this is.

Our Christmas social includes festive refreshments, quiz and a raffle.
