With the recent very warm Springs, the daffodil season is over all too soon. Here are some suggestions for later flowering daffodils to help extend the season.
With our changing climate, Spring is happening earlier and Winter starting later so we will have to think about planting our bulbs, bedding plants and seeds at different times. We may need to re-consider the varieties of daffodils we grow if we want a prolonged flowering period.
Daffodils I normally grow for the Spring Show are mainly sold as varieties that flower in early Spring, with some of them now flowering too early for the Show. I am now looking through the catalogues for a few daffodil varieties that flower normally in late April. I hope that if we have another very warm Spring, with daffodils flowering much earlier than usual, this will mean that I should still have some to enjoy in the garden and put in the Show .
Specialist bulb companies have better quality bulbs and I can recommend DutchGrown, J Parker Dutch Grown, Fentogollan, Bloms Bulbs and Farmer Gracy. Also, there is a list of other companies on the National Daffodil Society website. Peter Nyssen, for example, allows selection by time of blooming and AGM.
It's not too late to plant daffodils and some of the May flowering daffodils worth considering include:
- Acropolis
- Actaea
- Altun Ha
- Angels Whisper
- Blushing Belle
- Erlicheer
- Dutch Master
- Grand Soleil d’Or
- Paper White Ziva
- Petit Four
- Pink Champagne
- Tete Daluxe
- Jonquilla type daffodils
