HOW TO MAKE A SUPPORT FOR A BOWL OF FLOWERS
Alison Berry displayed a beautiful bowl of flowers at the Spring Show. Here are some of her suggestions for supporting your arrangement including how to create a firm structure for a bowl which is easy to make and looks attractive. As it does not use microplastic floral foam it is also eco-friendly and re-usable.
SUGGESTIONS FOR SUPPORTS
There are several ways that you can easily support flowers and foliage in a bowl.
Just scrunch up a piece of chicken wire so that it fits comfortably inside the bowl and will hold stems firmly.
Alternatively you can buy a flower frog such as the pin frogs shown here to secure your flowers.
However you can also make your own supports with twigs.
MAKING THE TWIG SUPPORTS
To make the twig circlet just twist together some long lengths of pliable twigs such as willow so the circlet fits neatly inside the top of your bowl. If you wish, you can bind the circlet with finer stems or wire. Loosely woven twigs will allow stems to be threaded through. The circlet also provides support.
Next, cut two lengths of strong twigs and position them so that they fit securely across your bowl and have a gap which will allow stems to be placed between them.
You can then place the twig circlet across the top of the bowl.
ASSEMBLING THE ARRANGEMENT
You’re now ready to place the flowers and foliage into the large spaces you’ve created and into the gap between the two big twigs.
You can adapt this structure and vary the spacing according to the arrangement you wish to make.
This method was used to provide the supports for a bowl of Spring flowers for the show. It could also be used in a Floral Art entry such as a centrepiece for a dining table.
